The Best Natural Alternative to Shampoo (It Detoxifies the Scalp Too)

Traditional shampoos are usually composed of ingredients such as sulphates, which allows the shampoo to lather up.

Other ingredients included could be isopropyl alcohol and propylene glycol among other things.

Ordinarily, these ingredients tend to dehydrate the hair but in a dry environment, the problem can be made much worse.

The dryness inevitably leads to other issues like hair breakage and split ends.

The Best Natural Alternative to Traditional Shampoo

In an earlier article, How to Go About Getting & Maintaining Clear and Healthy Skin Naturally, I discussed the harmful effects of chemical-laden products.

I also made several recommendations for where to find natural and organic products in Dubai.

Organic shampoos are great for the hair but there’s something else that’s even better. This awesome product has been around for a long time.

You may have already heard or read about it – Moroccan clay. It is aka ghassoul, rhassoul, bentonite clay, montmorillonite clay, and French clay.

What is Bentonite Clay?

Bentonite clay is derived from volcanic ash and was used as a healing method thousands of years ago.

It has a high concentration of excellent minerals for hair such as calcium, magnesium, silica, iron, potassium, and sodium.

Quality bentonite clay is grey/cream/deep brown in clay. It should be odourless as well. It is a natural product and has no side effects.

What are the Benefits of Bentonite Clay? How Does it Work on Hair?

Bentonite clay swells when hot water is added to it. It then opens up and becomes absorbent.

When you apply it to your hair, it draws out all the dirt and toxins in your hair and scalp without drying out your hair.

Additionally, it provides a relaxing effect when left on for a few hours. It doesn’t need to be washed out either.

It is rinsed out with lukewarm water once or twice then followed up with your usual style.

From the first bentonite clay treatment, expect stronger, shinier, and easier to handle locks.

Simple and Effective Bentonite Clay Recipe

This recipe is especially good for keeping hair moisturised.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Mix the bentonite clay with the hot water in a plastic bowl until dissolved. This could take a while depending on the type of clay. The whisk will get it done faster.
  • Once completely dissolved, add in the sweet almond oil and grapeseed oil. Whisk again.
  • Add in the organic apple cider vinegar. The pH of clay is quite high so the vinegar will help to bring it down a bit. Below is my mix halfway through.

  • Wait for the mixture to cool down, then apply all over your hair and scalp generously. Get it into your hair like you’re applying henna.
  • Once your head is covered, wrap cling film around your head then leave in for up to 4 hours.
  • Rinse out thoroughly then apply a leave-in conditioner before you style. Ensure the pH level of your leave-in is between 4 – 5.5 so it brings down the pH level of your hair and scalp and closes your cuticles.

You can also slather the leftover clay over your clean dry face and leave it on for 30 minutes then rinse off.

It will draw out the toxins in your skin. Excellent for treatment of acne, eczema, and the occasional breakout.
