Taking care of your skin in Dubai isn’t optional considering all the elements working against you – sun, wind, sand, water, etc. Short-term consequences include dry and itchy skin and long-term consequences include damaged and leathery skin.
I recently posted one of my pictures on Facebook and a few friends I went to school with were quite stunned that I looked pretty much the same compared to 15 years ago. They also wanted me to volunteer information on the age defying charm I’d been using. It was hilarious but there is no charm. I’ve just been extraordinarily careful about protecting my skin, outside as well as from the inside.
I didn’t like priming and propping skin before I moved to Dubai because I had perfect skin and didn’t think I needed to do anything beyond moisturiser. However, my skin went berserk within a few months of getting here and I had to battle acne for nearly 3 years. I had horrible hideous scars all over my cheeks and had to wear make up for the first time in my life.
As I carried out more research, moved closer to natural and organic products and monitored what I ate, I learnt to get the acne under control. I now use a specific set of skin care products, which work together to keep my skin soft, supple and youthful. I have outlined them by category below.
This is gentle and very good for sensitive skin. I use it on post peel days.
This is my regular cleanser. It’s gentle and the neem and turmeric in it helps keep my skin balanced and breakout free.
This is part of the Clinique anti-blemish solutions line. The line contains a cleanser as well as a moisturiser. However, I use only the clarifying solution. I alternate it with the mandelic acid toner depending on how my skin feels.
This is the main product that helped me get my acne under control. It got rid of all the dead skin cells that were clogging up my pores. Mandelic acid is derived from bitter almonds and is an alpha hydroxy acid. It also tightened up my pores.
Another great peel if your acne is particularly out of control. It contains 15% mandelic acid & 15% salicylic acid. I alternate this with the mandelic peel weekly. However, when I start experiencing breakouts, I use this exclusively because it’s great at drying out spots so I can extract them easily without leaving scars behind.
UNDER EYE CREAM
I don’t have any issues with my under eye area but that may be because I’ve been using this for so long. This cream keeps puffiness and lines at bay if used regularly and contains some great ingredients such as DMAE, squalene, co enzyme Q10, aloe, vitamins C & E and green tea extract.
This is my staple daily moisturiser. I have oily skin and it helps keep it under control in addition to closing up my pores effectively. It absorbs completely without leaving behind any residue or greasiness. Update: Unfortunately, this product has been discontinued and I’m currently searching for a suitable replacement. Will update once I find one.
I use this as a day and night moisturiser for 48 hours after I do any peel. It’s natural and doesn’t contain any acids as this will affect the results from the peel. It’s gentle and suitable for most skin types.
Make Up Artists Choice Aloe with Lavender Soothing GelI use this post peel as well. It’s just as effective as the green tea and pomegranate cleanser and my use of it depends on how my skin feels after a peel.
I added this into my skin care regimen 3 months ago and it has proved to be a total game changer. This product contains apple and orange stem cells. They claim it produces younger looking skin and I have to agree. My skin has been glowing more than usual ever since I started using it under my moisturiser every night. I cringed at the price for a 1oz bottle initially but after seeing the results, I’m happy to pay what it costs. On the plus side, it comes with a dropper so you can control how much you use without wasting it.
EXFOLIATING FACE MASK
This mask contains 5% glycolic acid and several essentials oils, which helps balance the skin while gently exfoliating. I use this every other week.
This body peel contains lactic, glycolic, mandelic, citric and salicylic acid. It’s great for gently exfoliating your body. Additionally, it contains licorice root extract, which balances out the skin tone. I use once a week on weekends when I’m not going out. A sunscreen post peel is vital as you skin will be more sensitive for a few days after the peel.
All the products listed above has been my skin care regimen for the last 5 years or so without change. Occasionally, when MUAC introducts a new product, I order a sample size to test it out and if it works, I include it in the regimen.
You can get Himalaya Herbals Face Wash & Clinique at any mall but Make Up Artist’s Choice isn’t available locally unfortunately. You can order it as well as many other products created for different skin types on their website. Use this LINK for 25% off your order. They ship internationally but you can also have it sent through your shop and ship account. It’s definitely worth the investment for your skin.
Caution: Always read the instructions of the peels carefully before using them as misuse can lead to burning your skin. Also perform a patch test prior to using.
